Mountain Lions Make Early Statement: Red Mountain Rises as AIA Title Contender

As the AIA baseball season gets underway, early matchups are already beginning to separate contenders from the rest of the field. One team making a strong statement in the opening weeks is Red Mountain, who currently sit at No. 2 in the rankings after an impressive stretch of performances against top competition.

The Mountain Lions delivered one of the most dominant weeks of baseball in the state, highlighted by a highly anticipated matchup against the No. 5 Queen Creek Bulldogs. Red Mountain controlled the game from start to finish, securing an 8–2 victory behind a powerful offensive showing. Key contributors included Simeon Johnson, who went 1-for-4 at the plate with a home run, Carter Macanas, who finished 2-for-4, and Caius Wilson, who added a 1-for-3 performance. The consistent offensive pressure proved overwhelming for Queen Creek throughout the contest.

On the mound, Drew Hanen delivered a complete-game performance, going the full seven innings, allowing just five hits while recording five strikeouts. His ability to limit scoring opportunities helped solidify what was already shaping up to be a statement win for the Mountain Lions.

Later in the week, Red Mountain faced an even bigger test against Brophy, who entered the matchup ranked No. 1 in the state following a notable win over Casteel. With top-ranking implications on the line, the Mountain Lions once again rose to the occasion, earning a decisive 10–2 victory. Offensively, Derek Wilson led the charge with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate, including a triple, while Keith Price added momentum with a home run. Brophy attempted to slow Red Mountain’s offensive surge by rotating five different pitchers, but the group still combined to allow 12 hits.

Pitcher Dylan Keith handled the bulk of the innings for Red Mountain, recording four strikeouts and helping maintain control of the game from the mound. The all-around execution showcased both depth and resilience from the Mountain Lions, particularly against elite competition.

Having already faced some of the toughest matchups on their regular-season schedule, Red Mountain is proving they have the talent, consistency, and momentum to make a serious push toward the postseason. If their early performances are any indication, the Mountain Lions could be a strong contender when the race for the state title begins to take shape.
