Saguaro Football Enters Uncharted Territory With Just 33 Players

One of Arizona’s most accomplished high school football programs is entering a situation it has never faced.

Saguaro reportedly has only 33 players across its entire football program entering the 2026 season. That number does not represent just the varsity roster, it includes every player in the program. Because of the limited participation, the Sabercats are expected to field only a varsity team, with no separate junior varsity or freshman teams.

The situation represents a stunning fall for a program that stood atop the 6A Conference less than three years ago. In 2023, Saguaro defeated Red Mountain 40-20 to capture the program’s 14th state championship under head coach Zak Hill.

Following the championship season, several key players transferred out of the program, while Hill departed to join the Seattle Seahawks as an offensive quality-control coach.

Darius Kelly was promoted to replace Hill, but Saguaro struggled to maintain its previous success. The Sabercats finished 1-9 in 2024 and 3-7 in 2025, giving Kelly a 4-16 record across two seasons before the program made another coaching change.

Now, Saguaro turns to Butch Goncharoff, who previously served as an assistant and run-game coordinator with the Sabercats. Goncharoff brings an accomplished resume, including 11 state championships and a 193-14 record during his time at Bellevue High School in Washington.

However, his first season leading Saguaro may be his most difficult challenge yet. With a roster heavily composed of freshmen, limited depth and no lower-level teams to develop younger players, the Sabercats enter 2026 facing one of the lowest points in the history of a program once considered the standard of Arizona high school football.
