Week 1 Preview: Arizona High School Football’s Top Games to Watch
The 2026 Arizona high school football season opens with a loaded three-day schedule featuring championship contenders, a historic rivalry, an upset-watch matchup and a nationally televised Open Division rematch.
Desert Edge at Cactus Shadows

Desert Edge will open its season under the Thursday night spotlight with an opportunity to showcase one of the deepest collections of talent in the 5A Conference.
The Scorpions enter the season with several Division I prospects, including Washington quarterback commit Blake Roskopf and Washington wide receiver commit Zerek Sidney. Desert Edge has the talent to compete for a championship, but it will immediately be tested by a Cactus Shadows program that consistently remains in the 5A playoff conversation.
Cactus Shadows has built a reputation as a competitive and well rounded program that should remain near the top of the division. Facing Desert Edge in the opening game will provide an immediate look at where both teams stand.
With two potential playoff contenders meeting before most teams have played their first game, Desert Edge at Cactus Shadows is the biggest 5A matchup of Week 1.
Red Mountain at Casteel

Red Mountain at Casteel is the premier game on Thursday night.
Red Mountain will begin the season with Eastmark transfer Dayne Silver at quarterback. Silver looked impressive during offseason seven-on-seven tournaments and now gets his first opportunity to lead the Mountain Lions in a full game.
Red Mountain has been building around a talented group of younger players, and its opening matchup will provide an immediate test against one of the state’s most established teams.
Casteel enters the season as the defending 6A state champion. Quarterback Tee Smith returns after helping lead the Colts to the championship and gives Casteel an experienced dual-threat option behind center.
Smith will also have playmakers around him, including Northern Arizona wide receiver commit RJ Gory. Kicker Nolan Balke is another important returning piece after receiving college interest from programs including Arizona and Washington.
This game should provide an early indication of what both programs could become this season. Red Mountain will test its new-look offense against a defending champion, while Casteel will begin its title defense against a talented and well-rounded opponent.
Salpointe Catholic at Marana

Salpointe Catholic and Marana will meet in one of Southern Arizona’s most notable opening-week games.
Salpointe features Kansas State wide receiver commit David Rushing, giving the Lancers a proven playmaker who can create difficult matchups for opposing defenses.
Marana has its own talented receiving option in Sean Roebuck, who enters the season as one of the notable players to watch in Southern Arizona.
The cross-conference matchup gives both teams an opportunity to compete against quality opposition before regional play begins. Salpointe has historically been one of Southern Arizona’s most recognizable programs, while Marana continues to build its presence as a team capable of competing with the area’s best.
This game will offer an early look at two programs hoping to establish themselves in their respective conference races.
Liberty at Mesa
Friday, August 28 | 6A — Upset Watch
Liberty at Mesa has the potential to become one of the most entertaining games of the opening weekend.
Mesa enters the season with one of its strongest-looking rosters in recent years. Although the Jackrabbits have a new head coach, they will have a full season with quarterback Kane Anetema and Arizona State wide receiver commit Kingston Anetema leading the offense.
The connection between Kane and Kingston could become one of the most dangerous quarterback-receiver combinations in the state. Kingston has already established himself as one of Arizona’s top receivers, while Kane will be responsible for directing a Mesa offense with high expectations.
Liberty has established itself as one of Arizona’s premier programs and enters another season with championship expectations. San Diego State wide receiver commit Baxton Huynh gives the Lions an experienced target capable of making an impact in important situations.
However, Liberty cannot afford to overlook a talented Mesa team playing at home.
This game has been placed on upset watch because it provides the Jackrabbits with an immediate opportunity to show how close they are to joining the top group of 6A contenders. It will also test whether Liberty can begin the season with the same consistency it has displayed in previous years.
Chandler at Basha
Saturday, August 29 | 6A | 7:30 p.m. Arizona Time
Week 1 concludes with the biggest game of the weekend.
Chandler and Basha will meet in a nationally televised Open Division State Championship rematch on ESPN. The game will receive a standalone Saturday night window, placing two of Arizona’s most talented programs in front of a national audience.
Chandler’s offense will be led by Oregon quarterback commit Will Mencl, one of the top quarterbacks in the state and country. Mencl will once again have Wisconsin wide receiver commit Jai Jones as one of his primary targets.
Basha also enters the game with talent throughout its roster. Quarterback Jake Rodgers stepped into the varsity role late last season and will now have the opportunity to lead the Bears from the beginning of the year.
Rogers will be surrounded by major college prospects, including Pittsburgh wide receiver commit Jaden Baldwin and Texas running back commit Noah Roberts.
The Bears are also strong along the line of scrimmage. Arizona State offensive line commit Jake Hilderbrand and California commit Dajohn Yarborough give Basha experience up front. Purdue edge commit T.K. Cunningham and Kansas State defensive line commit Anitoni Tahi headline a defensive front built to pressure opposing offenses.
The matchup features college-level talent at nearly every position and gives both programs an immediate test to begin the season.
With a 7:30 p.m. kickoff and no other major Arizona games competing for attention, Chandler at Basha will be the game to watch during the opening weekend.
A Loaded Opening Weekend
Week 1 will provide an immediate look at several programs expected to compete deep into the postseason.
Blake Roskopf and Zerek Sidney will lead Desert Edge into a major 5A matchup against Cactus Shadows. Dayne Silver will make his Red Mountain debut against Tee Smith and the defending 6A champions. Kane and Kingston Anetema will lead Mesa into an upset-watch opportunity against Liberty.
The weekend will then conclude with Will Mencl, Jai Jones, Jake Rodgers, Noah Roberts and several other Division I prospects taking the field during the nationally televised Chandler-Basha championship rematch.
The results will not define an entire season, but these matchups will provide the first major look at the players and programs expected to shape Arizona high school football in 2026.
