Position: Sports Writer Intern
Location: Phoenix, Arizona (NOTE: This role will be expected to travel to the east and west valley for game coverage.)
Job Type: Hybrid (NOTE: Applicant is expected to be at games in-person, edit on site or remotely.)

Bamboo Sports Media is an Arizona-based sports media company focused on covering high school athletics through photography, videography, journalism, live broadcasting, and social media storytelling. Founded by Jonathan Olden, Bamboo Sports Media has grown into one of Arizona’s emerging independent sports media outlets, producing content seen by thousands of athletes, families, schools, and fans across the state.
Our mission is to spotlight athletes, teams, and communities through high-quality creative media and storytelling. We cover sports throughout Arizona with a focus on delivering professional-level content for high school athletics, including game coverage, live broadcasts, interviews, feature stories, highlights, social media content, and championship event coverage.
Bamboo Sports Media works with schools, athletic programs, brands, and organizations to create engaging sports coverage while helping student-athletes gain recognition on a larger platform. Our team operates in fast-paced environments covering major matchups, playoff events, state championships, and community sports stories across Arizona.

Our internship and staff opportunities are designed to give creatives hands-on experience in sports photography, videography, journalism, social media, and broadcast production while working alongside an active media team covering live events throughout the state.
Job Summary:
Sports Writer Interns will work directly with the Bamboo Sports Media editorial team to develop original stories, cover sporting events, interview athletes and coaches, and produce written content for Bamboo's website and digital platforms.
Interns will have opportunities to cover games and events in person while building a portfolio of published work throughout the semester.
Job Duties:

Write and publish game previews, recaps, feature stories, athlete profiles, and other original sports content.

Attend assigned sporting events and provide on-site coverage.

Interview athletes, coaches, and other individuals relevant to assigned stories.
​

Research teams, players, statistics, storylines, and upcoming matchups.
​

Pitch original story and feature ideas to the Bamboo editorial team.

Assist with coverage of Arizona high school athletics and select collegiate sporting events.

Work alongside photographers, videographers, multimedia journalists, and social media staff to develop complete stories.

Meet assigned deadlines and communicate consistently with editors regarding coverage.

Maintain accuracy and professionalism when reporting scores, statistics, quotes, names, and other information.

Follow Bamboo Sports Media's editorial and professional standards while representing the organization at events.
Education/Requirements:

Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a college or university program.

Students pursuing a degree in Journalism, Sports Journalism, Sports Media, Communications, Digital Media, English, or a related field are encouraged to apply.

High school seniors with significant journalism, yearbook, broadcasting, or sports media experience may also be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience writing for a student newspaper, sports publication, school media program, website, or other digital publication.

Experience covering sporting events and working in deadline-driven environments.

Strong understanding of AP Style and basic journalistic writing principles.
​

Experience conducting and recording interviews with athletes, coaches, or other sources.

Knowledge of Arizona high school and/or collegiate athletics.

Ability to identify compelling storylines beyond game results and statistics.

Strong research, fact-checking, proofreading, and editing skills.
​

Familiarity with content management systems (CMS) and publishing articles online is a plus.

Experience using social media as a reporting and story-distribution tool.

Ability to provide published writing samples or a writing portfolio is strongly preferred.
​

Reliable transportation to assigned games, interviews, and other events throughout the Phoenix metropolitan area.
